Japan Candy Box

Last Wednesday my prize from Menia Pretty Little Things blog arrived - a Japan Candy Box, a monthly subscription box from Blippo Kawaii Shop.

Each box contains 8 - 10 packs of Japanese sweets. Anthony and I decided the best thing to do would be to try them all out at once. Here are our verdicts:

☆ Glico Panda Pocky in cookies and cream flavour. Pocky is Pocky is Pocky. In other words, Pocky is always a winner.

☆ Puccho Awawawa Ball Candy (soda). These are sour. So sour. I spat mine out after about 3 seconds, while Anthony ate his as quickly as possible while flapping his hands around (manfully, of course). When my mum came round I offered her one, because I'm cruel like that. Contrary to all my expectations she thought they were the best thing since sliced bread - 'so refreshing' - and polished off the rest of the packet. Definitely a mixed verdict!

☆ Kracie Popin' Cookin' DIY Takoyaki. We haven't tried this one yet because it required more effort than simply opening the packet.

☆ Coris Whistle Candy (strawberry). There were my favourite! They were kind of like the consistency of Parma Violets, but more melt in your mouth. Apparently you're supposed to blow through the hole to turn them into a whistle, but I only learned this after I'd eaten them all. The box at the bottom contained a little plastic yellow Godzilla type figure - another piece for that upcoming miniature toy shop diorama.

☆ I'm not sure what these are called, but they were like little digestive biscuit puffs. A bit odd but pleasant enough.

☆ I couldn't work out what these were from the Blippo website, but they were little hard candies that came in cardboard box emblazoned with a capital 'E'. Cue immature jokes from both of us about taking E. We both liked these, they tasted like Nerds.

☆ Little gummy pinapple sweets. These were great, and seemed to have more flavour than British gummy sweets.

☆ Puccho Stick Candy (mango). These were kind of weird, they're chewy fruit sweets but the consistency is more like bubble gum. The flavour was great though and we soon finished the lot.

☆ Bourbon Petit White Chocolate Filled Cookies. What it says on the tin, basically. These were really really sweet, and none of us were a particular fan of them.

☆ Lotte Koala's March strawberry. These are like little biscuits with strawberry filling, they reminded us of something from our childhood but we couldn't pinpoint exactly what. They were Anthony's favourite item, and I enjoyed them too.

After we'd tested them all we both had major sugar rushes. No wonder Japanese pop culture can be so manic!

Overall the box was lots of fun and really brightened up our evening. The 'mystery' element of not being sure what the sweets were made the tasting session a good laugh - though probably isn't advisable if you have food allergies.
