I'm pretty new to StumbleUpon myself, so here is a guide to everything I've learned so far...
What is StumbleUpon?
Founded way back in 2002, StumbleUpon works kind of like the shuffle button on your iPod - it 'stumbles upon' a random web page. You can then rate that page with a thumbs up or a thumbs down, depending on what you thought of it, or just click 'stumble' for a new page. The more you stumble, the better the site becomes at predicting the kind of content you'll want to stumble across.
Thumbs up or thumbs down. |
Why should I be using StumbleUpon?
StumbleUpon has over 25 million active users who spend, on average, around 25 minutes stumbling per session. The site can easily drive thousands of views to your post - speaking in averages, it generally generates 3x more traffic than Reddit.
How do I use StumbleUpon?
First you need to create a StumbleUpon account by clicking HERE and pick some interests, like this:
You can add more interests by searching for topics or clicking interests in the top bar, which will take you to recommended and popular interests. |
With that done you can start stumbling. If you don't like the page, click the thumbs down - you can choose from six options in the drop down menu to give more detail: Not For Me, Seen Page Already, Page Does Not Load, Report As Spam, Report Wrong Topic, or Block This Site. If you do like the page, click the thumbs up button. You can create lists to add your likes to, and this can be a great way for collating all the stumbled posts from your own blog, or simply creating a folder of pages on a particular topic.
If you're just browsing the web and want to add a page to StumbleUpon, you can do it through the site itself ('add a page') or you can download the StumbleUpon toolbar HERE so you can just click the thumbs up icon. Note: your account must be at least 24 hours old before you can add pages.
Viewing one of my own posts with the downloaded SU toolbar at the top. The vast majority of SU users are based in the USA, so the audience for posts like this will inevitably be small.
How can I make my blog StumbleUpon friendly?
The things which make posts attractive to StumbleUpon users are basically the same as on any other network. Good content, cool images, and clear formatting. The main difference is that it's all about the first impression - it will only take someone a second to decide whether to read on or thumbs down your post. An interesting title and catchy header image are your friends when it comes to StumbleUpon.
'Listicles' (i.e. an article presented in the form of a numbered or bullet-pointed list) tend to do particularly well on StumbleUpon, again reflecting the snap decision making, and low attention span encouraging format of the network. Although, saying that, my most successful post for StumbleUpon traffic so far has been a relatively in-depth write up of the Titanic Switch Conspiracy Theory which has had over 4,000 hits from SU. If the topic is right, people will stumble it.
StumbleUpon traffic can have a high bounce rate - visitors only look at one page then move on - so if you don't have a plugin which does it for you, make sure you link to other relevant content on your blog both within your post, and at the end of it. These options are at the end of my What is Domain Authority? post. |
An important aspect to stumbling is the interests and tags ascribed to the page when it is added. For this reason it can be a good idea is to make the initial stumble of your post yourself. (Note: you cannot add categories, etc, if you stumble from your phone.) With that done you can then encourage others to stumble the post - you could add a StumbleUpon share button to the bottom of your post, for example.
If nobody takes the bait, you can help things along by using blogger engagement groups like StumbleUpon Bloggers, Daily StumbleUpon Thread, and StumbleUpon Wednesdays at Blog Engagement & Promotion Group.
Is there anything else I should know?
You cannot use StumbleUpon to promote your own commercial webpage, defined as a webpage 'that promotes a specific product or service'. To stumble such a page you need to use StumbleUpon Paid Discovery. Similarly, you cannot just stumble from your own blog. There is a limit to how many times you can stumble from the same domain, to prevent spammers, so mix your own posts up with other content.
If you break either of these rules your account, according to the site's terms, can be suspended or terminated. They seem to have been very strict on this a few years ago, but the company has since downsized and reduced their staff numbers - a google search doesn't throw up anything about suspended or banned accounts after 2011. Just proceed with caution, I guess!
This was some great information, I'm checking it out now. Thanks!

It may take a while for me to totally figure it out though but I have noticed recently I do get a fair bit of traffic from there mainly for my short stories I write #KCACOLS
ReplyDeleteI think so! :) I find it's a bit hit and miss which of mine do well, but it's definitely another tool for the arsenal! x
DeleteHi, I've got the StumbleUpon app and I had a look at it and didn't have a clue how to use it! Your post has helped alot thank you. I will need to read it a few times though as it just still seems tricky, I will use your guide as a tutorial and not let it get the better of me!:)

DeleteThis is a great post, so informative. Thanks for writing this, I have no idea about Stumble Upon, I now want to go check it out and find out more, it sounds like a great tool for blogging xx #kcacols
ReplyDeleteThank you! It takes a bit of time to get your head around it, but it can work really well. x

ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteGood advice, Jess. I have to admit I've faffed around occasionally with SU without ever really understanding it or getting any significant traffic from it. Maybe I should try again ... #pocolo
ReplyDeleteIt can work really well - but it does take some faffing!
DeleteInteresting - I never knew much about StumbleUpon, but it sounds like it might be worth trying. Will need to check it out! #KCACOLS
ReplyDeleteLet me know how you get on :)
DeleteI started using su more regularly a couple of months ago and get around so many extra hits from it.
ReplyDeleteI've really seen a difference since I started using it!
DeleteGreat information! I have had a Stumbleupon account for a while but wasn't sure how to make the most from it! thanks xx
ReplyDelete#KCACOLS
So glad it was useful! x
DeleteI've been trying to use SU more recently but I don't think my content is particularly suited to it so I've not seen much extra traffic. I've got a few ideas for list type posts though so maybe those will do better. It's annoying that you can't add categories when stumbling from your phone too. #sharewithme
ReplyDeleteTutorials and recipes also tend to do well, I find. x
DeleteThis is so helpful. I've had some great hits with a couple of posts from Stumble Upon. I've just added the toolbar to make it easier to stumble posts and I really need to get a stumble button on my blog. Thanks for sharing! #KCACOLS x
ReplyDeleteSo glad it was useful! I've found the stumble bar a really big help with getting to grips with it x
DeleteThis is brilliant and I need to come back to it later to do it. I got a few tweets from people asking why I wasn't on there and so I need to up my game. I signed up but haven't looked further into it. Thanks for all your passing on of knowledge. Thanks for linking up to #ShareWithMe.
ReplyDeleteThank you! I hope they help you out with it. x
DeleteThis post came at a perfect time! I've recently had some good traffic from StumbleUpon but it's dropped all of a sudden so I'm looking at what I can do to get it back. Thanks for sharing your tips.
ReplyDeleteOh and I will read your Titanic theory - fascinated by the Titanic I must admit #KCACOLS
Hope it helps! (Me too - I can read about it all day.) x
DeleteI have been using SU just for one week I think, so I still don't know much about it. I'm learning by the day. Your tips are very useful. I didn't know how to add my own post but yes the tip of having a SU button helps. I tried the other day to add one of my blog posts but it was not showing the thumbnail and I didn't know why. So now I share my content in Facebook threads with a link directly to the blog post so they can SU using that button. I haven't experienced much traffic yet but I haven't shared much yet either. Thanks so much for sharing this at #KCACOLS. I would love to see you again on Sunday! :-) x
ReplyDeleteI've found it to be hit and miss which posts do well, but the ones that have done well have made it worth it. x
DeleteGreat list of tips, I've been using StumbleUpon for a few years but got into it more recently. I think you're right about making sure to add others' pages, definitely the way to go! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing with #PoCoLo
Thank you! :)
DeleteStumbleupon is on my to do list and it seems to be getting a lot of attention right now in the blogging world. This looks like a post I'll be coming back to - thank you - and for linking up to #PoCoLo x
ReplyDeleteIt does seem to be the 'in' thing at the moment! x
DeleteOoo thanks for the tips on the stumble groups on FB will be checking them out, as I still think I am under utilising this!! #MarvMondays
ReplyDeleteGlad it helped! :)
