'An intriguing and original YA sci-fi novel that constantly keeps you guessing. Tattoo transports you into a totally new world yet also carries a very real subliminal message about prejudice. A fantastic read that you won’t want to put down.' Sounds fab, right? The good news is that I have a copy of this fun sci-fi-com (com-sci-fi?) by Landan England to give away. You can get up to five entries by filling out the Gleam form below:
UK only.
If you aren't lucky enough to win you can buy Tattoo via Amazon - £9.99 for the paperback and £4.99 on Kindle. For my review of Tattoo and the other books I finished in May, keep reading. :)

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Fiction, 2016. This debut novel by Landan England follows the story of Brock, a self-confessed cynic who has his life turned upside down after taking the plunge and getting a tattoo on his wrist. The tribal design he drew up himself turns out to be more than aesthetically pleasing - it's the mark of a sophisticated alien society, and Brock's portal to a world very different from his own.
Except, even with all the advancements the people he encounters have made, they still suffer from an age old hang up: prejudice. Set against the backdrop of some fun and detailed world building, Tattoo is an interesting exploration of racism, and the dangers of blindly accepting what we are told without challenge.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Non-Fiction, 2015. Harrowing true life story of a girl who thought she had found love, but instead found herself forced into prostitution and increasingly desperate situations. The writing style is simple and to the point, making it a quick - if not quite easy - read. Pains are taken not to lay the blame at any one door, but the book raises many questions about her local authority social services department which I hope were covered in the policy reviews the case doubtless triggered. Just a little more thoroughness could have prevented the entire tragedy.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Non-Fiction, 2005. Really interesting account of the investigation into the Wests, and the massive amount of policework involved to bring Rose West to justice. This isn't sensationalist in any way, but somehow the murders seem all the more gruesome for it. There were a few times I had to put the book down and do something else because I just didn't want to contemplate how much those poor girls had suffered.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Non-Fiction, 2015. Well researched account of a Victorian arsenic poisoning case - following the tumultuous inquest through to Sarah Barber's eventual death as a free woman in Tasmania. I would have liked to see a tighter SPAG edit but it's still well worth reading for history and true crime fans! View all my reviews.
