Yesterday we went to the official opening of the new Frog Bikes factory on Mamhilad Park Estate in Pontypool. I was really impressed with what we saw!
About Frog Bikes
Frog Bikes are all about kids; they have set about making the best possible bikes for children, all with the goal of making cycling easier and more fun. The frames are all lightweight aluminium, as opposed to the traditional steel - which often means a child's bike weighs almost as much as the child riding it.
They also have a unique crank design, making the bikes easier for kids to pedal. (And less likely to tire after five minutes and leave you to push / carry the bike around...)
Right now, the range includes balance bikes (called Tadpoles!), first pedal bikes, road bikes, track bikes, and very smart looking hybrid bikes. Plus helmets, lights, bottles, bags, and 'Handlebar Heroes'. In readiness for the Olympics, they even launched a Union Jack range with Joanna Rowsell.
Frog Bikes and South Wales
Initially, Frog Bikes were manufactured in China but this made it a) more difficult to control supply, and b) environmentally unfriendly in terms of the bikes' carbon footprint. The decision to relocate the process to the UK was good news for Torfaen as they chose to set up shop on the Mamhilad Park Estate in Pontypool, creating a bunch of new jobs.
I've had the date of the official opening in my diary for a while, as I knew I'd be standing in for the mayor. I also had it down as a family day so I turned up dressed down with Anthony and Marianna in tow - only to find everyone else in suits for a tour of the new offices and production line.
This is completely typical of my life, so it didn't even phase me. Marianna decided she didn't want to walk, and didn't want to go to Anthony, so he got to carry my handbag while I carried Marianna. (I think he's finally found his calling!) It was so cool to see how bikes are put together, and Marianna seemed transfixed by it all. Plus she got a piece of chocolate cake afterwards. :)
It's so great to see new businesses coming into the area, and bringing innovative products and ideas with them. You can get a look inside the factory yourself via THIS ITV news report.

The bikes look awesome, and I hope Frog Bikes continues to go from strength to strength! Take a look at the Frog Bikes range for yourself at www.frogbikes.com. You can also connect with them on social media via Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
They also have competitions running every day until August 21st. Check it out!

Handlebar Heroes give your bike real horse power! (How cute is that!?)
