Winter is on its way, and that means coughs, sneezes, and the spreading of diseases. At least if you believe the public health information bureaus. Here are some of my favourite health posters of all time, like this incredibly awful 1979 poster from The Health Education Council:
Still in the 1970s, here's Marc Bolan telling you he won't want to kiss you if you smoke:
Next up is a RoSPA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents) workplace safety poster from the 1940s - with lots of women entering the workforce during WW2 this kind of advice was deemed absolutely necessary to prevent women from wandering around factories in their evening gowns. (Probably.)
Sticking with RoSPA, we have the Green Cross Code - I don't know what it's called in the States, but it's the 'stop, think, look and listen' advice for crossing the road. In the 70s we had a superhero called, wait for it, Green Cross Man (played by the guy who was Darth Vader in Star Wars), who would tell kids, "I won't be there when you cross the road so always use the Green Cross Code!" In the 80s we had a funky rap based on a track by Grandmaster Flash, and when I was a kid the hedgehogs ruled supreme:
Children of all ages will also know Tufty - he's a squirrel who, in handpuppet form, goes into nurseries and primary schools to encourage kids to be safe on the roads. I was doing some work experience in a nursery once when the Tufty Lady (I assume these people have an actual job title, but they're always known as Tufty Ladies) came in and asked the kids what they should wear when they go cycling. The reply? Socks. Bless 'em! :D
