Last week I was contacted by Clever Champs, a small company with big goals. They want to help educate and inspire the next generation by simultaneously getting kids interested in reading and STEM subjects by engaging their curiosity. By offering personalised story books, Clever Champs have found a way to introduce some pretty huge topics in an easily digestable format.
We were offered a personalised copy of 'The Missing Moon' to review and I knew it would be perfect for Marianna on two counts. First, Marianna's class has been learning about space at school so I knew it would be particularly relevant. Second, we bought Marianna a personalised version of 'The Snowman' a few years ago and she still talks about how cool it was that time she was actually in the story.
Using that twist to get kids learning is a simple but really ingenious idea and I had high hopes for its success in our own home.
The Clever Champs website is attractively laid out and, most importantly, super easy to navigate. Sometimes personalised products like this can prove really daunting to order as there are lots of questions or too many options. Clever Champs offer enough personalisation to make it special - e.g. names of child / children, basic appearance, etc - but not so much that I felt like I had to set aside a big chunk of the day to get the order finished! In fact, the entire process was really easy.
Shipping was also completely stress free. Clever Champs have a workshop in London so, with a turnaround time of two to three days for production, plus delivery, the book was with me in under a week.

On the day the book arrived Marianna chatted all the way home from school about Mae Jemison, who they had been learning about that afternoon. There really couldn't have been a more perfect time to hand over her present. I watched as she went from excitement to slight disappointment - it was a book and not, say, a giant bar of chocolate after all - but then, as she read the title, it went right back to excitement. Her whole face just lit up as she told me this was a book about her.
Because Marianna is a very accomplished reader for her age. (7) It's just that most of the time she refuses to use the skill for anything other than playing Roblox. Now she came straight over to read the story to me, pausing only to excitedly interject with facts she knew about the different planets in our solar system. She read the whole book from cover to cover, then read some of it again for her dad.

Today Marianna took the book to her grandparents to show them, then read them the story. (Taking valuable time out from her Roblox allowance to do so...) She has even asked if she can take it into school next week to show her teacher.
I had hoped the personalisation would encourage her to engage with the book and have a go at reading it, but her actual reaction was so much more positive than I had imagined. Marianna really enjoyed the story and it helped reinforce her learning about the order of the planets, etc. In short, I would definitely recommend Clever Champs to anyone looking for a great gift for the kid in their life.
