This Week #2

Follow Your Heart. Just don't forget to take your brain with you.

It was Full Council on Tuesday (webcast HERE), and Joint Scrutiny (webcast HERE) on Thursday so I got to see plenty of the inside of the Chamber. On Wednesday Anthony decided to go out at midday and roll in at 2am - alright for some! - so Marianna and I spent the day singing, riding in / pushing the toddle car (respectively), and watching Rainbow. We were also in the local paper this week, talking about local facilities for babies.

Most of the weekend was spent without internet access (bar 3G) which was a living nightmare. It reminded me of that episode of High Hopes where Charlie and Hoffman ask Fagin what people did before television...

Fagin: Nothing. We was as bored as hell. Endless nights just sitting around, waiting to go to bed.

People think we're sisters!
Marianna with her Baba - she's even started saying Baba now, it's so cute.

☆ READING: I finished Outlander.

☆ WRITING: More True Crime, this time the murder of Kitty Roman in Miller's Court in 1909.

☆ WATCHING: I caught the first two episodes of Detectorists on BBC4 the other night. It's really good! Larry Bishop is a brilliant character, and the detecting side of things rings so so true.

☆ LISTENING: Uncle Kracker. Before last week I never knew he had done more than Follow Me. But check out Smile. Easy listening at its best.

☆ WEARING: Plaits. The perfect hairstyle for when you have no time.

☆ EATING: Toast.

☆ FEELING: Tired.

Besides the posts already mentioned, I wrote a guide to dolls designed without hair, and a quick review of Minimum World miniatures. My first blog competition, for a copy of SuperLucky Secrets, finished last night with a total of 634 entries. The winner has been drawn and contacted, but thanks so much to everyone who took the time to enter!

To top it off, I made 100 likes on my blog Facebook page this week. :D

Mini Mart: Minimum World

The photo envelope with negatives on the table is from Minimum World, as is the little blue glass jar on the shelf in the background.

Supplier: Minimum World
Website: minimumworld.com. You can also find them on Facebook and Pinterest.

Products: Wide range of 1/12 with some 1/16 and 1/24 scale miniatures. The website is easy to navigate, and there is a working search function if you're looking for something specific. They stock lots of big brands, including Richard Stacey bricks, tiles, etc.

This is probably my favourite purchase.

As usual, I was on the lookout for accessories. I bought some tools and garden gnomes for the Sindy green house I'm working on, an artist's paint set, photo negatives, some glass jars and bottles, and some really tiny metal coins.

Post and Packing: Free domestic postage on orders over £40, otherwise it's £3.95. You can upgrade to special delivery for £4.95. They ship worldwide, and even offer free USA and Australian shipping on orders over $50 and $50AUD, respectively. My order was really well packaged and reached me within a few days.

This Week #1

Challenge is a dragon with a gift in its mouth. Tame the dragon and the gift is yours.

I quite like the idea of having a post recording what's been happening in the week, and have been thinking about starting one for a while. I suppose it fits the traditional idea of what a blog is all about - an online diary. Alice Megan has a really nice layout for the kind of thing I've been wanting to do over on her blog (see HERE), so I've based mine on that and will tweak it as I go.

It's been a pretty uneventful week, to be honest. My brother passed on some of his germs and left me with a stinking cold, Anthony insisted on re-watching Gavin & Stacey for roughly the 3000th time, and Marianna put her new ability to clap her hands to good use. Hopefully next week will be more exciting!

Marianna just loves cardboard boxes.

☆ READING: Outlander...

☆ WRITING: Ripper related True Crime posts. Find My Past had a free weekend so I made the most of the opportunity to try and confirm Kitty Roman's name. I'll be posting that one next week, for now check out The Willful Murder of Eliza Roberts (1898).

☆ WATCHING: Broadwalk Empire. Anthony has the first series on DVD - so far I'm loving it.

☆ LISTENING: Nickelback. I never understand why the internet hates them so much. If sticking to the same formula was a musical crime, the charts would be empty.

☆ WEARING: Pyjamas!

☆ EATING: Three cheese spread sandwiches. Nothing new there.

☆ FEELING: Ill. :(

I posted my review of Funky Giraffe bibs - if you like the look of them, I'm running a giveaway to win a pack of 10 worth £20. My giveaway for a copy of Di Coke's brilliant 'SuperLucky Secrets: 100 tips for winning competitions, contests and sweepstakes' is also still running HERE. The lovely Serenata Flowers contacted me this week to ask if I'd like to review and host a giveaway for one of their hampers too. Keep an eye out for that post!

In the world of miniatures, I posted a guide to 1/6 scale laundry items (washing machines, rotary lines, and more), and a review of The Dolls House Store. Anthony has set up his own blog too: The Man Down My Local, AKA The Repository of All Political Knowledge.

Giveaway: Funky Giraffe Bibs

Babies are gross. That's a fact. They're forever dribbling, and sicking, and getting covered in mysterious substances you never feel inclined to examine too closely. For these reasons - and more - a bib is an absolute must, even if all too often they feel like a necessary evil, detracting as they do from your carefully chosen outfit. (The baby's, that is. You feel accomplished if what you're wearing is relatively clean.)

I was really excited then to be asked if I would like to review a selection of bibs from Funky Giraffe, a brand which really understands that style and comfort are not concepts which have to be mutually exclusive.

Like a Kid in a Candy Store

Armed with a £15 voucher I was let loose on the website. I knew as soon as the page opened that this was my kind of place - bright colours, cool patterns, and easy navigation. What comes across more than anything is that Funky Giraffe really care about the products they've created, and the individuals who are going to be using them. Check out the 'About Us' section for more on why the brand came into being, and what is important to them now they are established.

The main page.

Next, choosing what to spend the dosh on. There is more to Funky Giraffe than bibs - they also sell adorable socks, cool scratch mitts, cozy scarves, and trendy burp cloths. Even within the bib section there is plenty of choice. Formal bibs (so cute!), bandana bibs, cotton summer bibs, bamboo bibs, personalised bibs, and even bibs with frilly collars. I was also really impressed with their range of larger bandana bibs for 'older children and adults who need dribble protectors'. Everybody deserves the chance to inject a bit of fun and colour into their lives.

Some of the cute stuff I didn't buy.

I decided to go for the classic bandana bibs, made from 100% cotton with a fleece backing. The only problem was whittling down the designs I liked to a reasonable number. When I began adding items to my basket I had a pleasant surprise - the more you buy, the more you save. So while a single bib costs £4, buy two and it will only cost you £6. The following table gives the full details:

If you spend over £7 - and let's face it, how could you not? - UK postage is free. EU postage is £3 / £5 (under or over 0.25kg up to 0.5kg - the equivalent of around 25 bandana bibs), worldwide is £3.50 / £6.50. Orders are generally dispatched within 48 hours, and there is a 60 day 'no-quibble' return policy. My order was with me in two days!

Put To The Test

Once the bibs were here, I couldn't wait to try them out on Marianna. I had been primarily using regular 'din-dins' time bibs with a plastic backing for the purposes of dribbling, but Marianna was far from pleased about the arrangement. While the plastic did make an agreeable scrunching noise, she didn't like the velcro fastening and, as her arms grew stronger, soon learned how to pull the bib off.

Some of the designs I chose. The ranges are updated frequently, so it's worth visiting often.

The Funky Giraffe bibs were an entirely different story. They feel really soft and cosy to me, and that must translate because she didn't pull or scratch at them. The fleece backing does the same job as the plastic (far better, I must say, than the fleece backing on the supermarket dribble bibs we had), but without being uncomfortable. Instead of velcro they have a double popper fastening which is more secure, gives a bit of growth room, and doesn't destroy your tights in the washing machine. And talking of washing, they wash really well. We've been using them for over three weeks now - allowing for a dozen or so washes - and they still look fresh and vibrant. If I ironed them they would look like new, but that would be a step too far for a houseworkphobic mum like myself.

Modelling Funky Giraffe with my mum at Greenmeadow Community Farm.

On top of all that they just look really really cool. We've had lots of nice comments while out and about, especially on the pterodactyl print. Anthony wants one of his own! Marianna, however, is not keen on sharing...

Mini Mart: The Dolls House Store

The Master foresees an accident.

Supplier: The Dolls House Store
Website: www.thedollshousestore.co.uk
You can also find them on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. They also have a brick and mortar store in Kettering.

Products: The Dolls House Store is one of the biggest 1/12 scale retailers in the UK, and has a huge range of furniture, decorations, and accessories. The website is one of the better ones - the only real issue is that there is no 'view all' option within each category, so you can find yourself trawling through a lot of pages in some of the popular sections.

I wanted a few little bits and pieces - e.g. a small bucket (to be a 1/6 scale plant pot), a first aid box, a garden gnome, and best of all a tiny little MP3 player. I took my haul around to my mum's to take some photos in the Malibu Beach House. The remnants of Anthony's never ending Dr Who eBay listing had great fun trying it all out...

Post and Packing: My order was sent wrapped in bubble wrap and boxed, and cost £4.99 to ship. Delivery was quick and painless, but it did take a little longer to be refunded for the items which were out of stock (these were listed on the included invoice).

Mini Mart: Elf Miniatures

The pose skeletons check out my purchases from Elf.

Supplier: Elf Miniatures
Website: www.elfminiatures.co.uk - you can also find them on Facebook.

Products: Elf Miniatures has been around since 1996 and is one of the best known suppliers of modern looking 1/12 scale miniatures. They specialise in top end 1/12 scale kitchens and bathrooms. Just look at this:

and this:

From the customer photo gallery.

My mum has been kitting out her Malibu Beach House with Elf, so it promises to look very swank once it's done! Being a 1/6 scale kind of girl, my principle interest in Elf is their accessory selection. I picked up a few cool things in their sale section - a Frankenstein book, toy packaging, and large tins which look good in 1/6 - along with some other bits and bobs. My favourite piece is the tiny box of camera film and the spiral bound notebooks. They look so realistic!

Post and Packing: If your items can be sent large letter, postage is £2. If not, it depends on the size and weight of your order. My order was sent securely in clear self seal bags in a box lined with bubble wrap, and arrived within a couple of days. A couple of the items I'd ordered were not in stock, and customer services were very quick at informing and refunding me.

Mini Mart: Victoria Miniland

The Wicked Witch of the West (Disney Store), Queen Amidala (Hasbro) and Synergy (Integrity Toys Jem) enjoy dinner by candlelight.

Supplier: Victoria Miniland
Website: Etsy Store.
There is also a website www.miniland.ca which has loads more cool stuff.

Products: [Note: Not all items ship to the UK.] High quality 1/48 scale furniture sets, 1/12 scale roomboxes and miniatures (including more unusual items like coffins and theatre seats), and - what I was looking for - 1/6 scale LED battery lights. I'd been looking for 1/6 scale candles for quite a while, so ordered a set of two for £15.22 (CAD $29.99).

I'm really pleased with them and they look great in the sixth scale dining room!

Cyberman is playing Butler.

Post and Packing: The candlesticks were sent very well packaged - wrapped up in foam and plastic, protected by polystyrene peanuts in a cardboard box. Included was a 20% off voucher for the new website and a mini pack of Starburst (which I'm eating as I write this, and very nice it is too!). UK shipping was £5.99 and it took just over a week to arrive from Canada.
