Picture Show Magazine, 20th September 1947

20th September 1947 edition of Picture Show and Film Pictorial. Picture Show began as a weekly magazine in 1919 and eventually closed in December 1960. In 1947 Britain was still facing shortages - this issue is only 16 pages long, with small, cramped type to get as much content onto as little paper as possible.

There is film gossip about upcoming projects, horoscopes, a short story, and film listings for the coming fortnight. ...I hadn't heard of any of them. Page 12 has the life story of Robert Hutton, accompanied by a picture which 'can be cut out and pasted on a postcard'. That's how you got your celebrity fix in 1947, you know. Page 13 has advice on the latest fashions in blouses, and how gloves are the perfect finishing touch to any outfit. My favourite bit has to be the advert for Liver Bile without Calomel. Apparently 'you'll jump out of bed in the morning full of vim and vigour.' For just 1/5.

I love seeing how tastes, fashions and opinions have changed over time. I've already bought Marianna a bunch of history books - hopefully she will love them as much as I do!

[Note: I've made the decision to downsize my own magazine / book collection a bit. If you're interested in retro pop culture, check out my eBay HERE. ]

Margaret Lockwood and Dermot Walsh feature on the front cover in a still from Jassy, the only Gainsborough melodrama to be filmed in colour.

  1. So classic!

    1. Isn't it? I love old cinema, it was so glamorous. :)

  2. How cool is this - such a different style of class to everything that is produced now! Thanks for linking up with #TwinklyTuesday

    1. I've got a great one from about '51 that asks if the glamour girls have gone too far - for wearing low cut dresses! I don't think they could cope with the typical copy of Heat or whatever today. :)

Simply Cook Review

I kept seeing ads and deals for Simply Cook everywhere, so as there was a special offer on at OhMyDosh! Rewards (£3 for the box and £3.50 cashback) I figured I had nothing to lose by giving it a try. What Is It? Recipe kits packed into boxes which fit through your letterbox. The usual price is £9.99 for a kit of 4, with each one serving 2-4 people depending on your serving sizes. All you need to do is buy the fresh ingredients required and follow the instructions. Here is Simply Cook's own helpful diagram: Does It Work? For me, as the person just eating it, it was awesome. Everything tasted great - the mushroom penne in particular was so good I went back for seconds - and I liked that the sauces weren't as rich as Anthony would usually make them. For Anthony, who cooked them, they weren't as impressive. He complained that the food was bland and that it was actually quite a lot of faff, as Lidl didn't stock everything we needed which meant another trip ou
